O gracious God,
The snares of this world are endlessly enticing,
Imploring me to construct their altars.
It is with no great difficulty
That my heart adores such idols,
Which cannot accompany me into heaven.
Even in my regenerate state,
Wherein my sanctification is sure,
My flesh entreats the world to bring me pleasure.
But in the depths of my soul I perceive,
In the recesses of my heart I understand
That You alone fully satisfy.
Grant that my heart long for less of the world
And more of Christ,
And may He be the treasure to which I cling.
But grant also that, though Christ is mine,
I view Him as an endless and enticing treasure,
One that I must excavate daily to better enjoy.
All material gifts in this world will fade,
And even our loved ones will see decay;
But the Word of the Lord endures forever.
Now in Your grace
And by the power of Your Spirit
Increase my love for and dependence on my Lord and Savior.
